Welcome to March — and welcome to a new and improved PowerTV experience.

This month isn't just about great content (though there's plenty of it). It's about making sure you're set up for the best possible streaming experience from device to screen. We've learned a lot over the past few months, and we're making some important changes that will directly benefit you.

Service has been rock solid lately — sporting events, live UFC, F1, and Oilers hockey have all been delivering cleanly — and On Demand is being updated regularly with minimal buffering. We want to keep it that way, and that starts with the right hardware.

🎮 Device Guide & Important Updates

✅ Service Status — Things Are Running Great

First, some good news: PowerTV's performance has been excellent lately. Live sporting events — including Edmonton Oilers games, UFC events, and Formula 1 races — have been streaming smoothly and reliably. On Demand content is being refreshed regularly, and buffering has been minimal. This is exactly the experience you deserve, and we're working hard to keep it this way.

⚠️ Known Issue: Amazon FireTV Devices

If you're on an Amazon FireTV device and your video freezes while the audio keeps playing — you're not alone, and it's not your internet connection.

This is a known bug triggered by recent mandatory Amazon firmware updates. Unfortunately, this is outside of PowerTV's control, as the issue originates from Amazon's end. The good news: Google TV devices do not have this problem. If you're experiencing this issue regularly, it's time to consider upgrading your device.

No immediate concern: Amazon FireTV devices are expected to keep working as they currently are. If the video freezes (and the audio continues), simply change the channel and then change back again.

📱 Important Changes to How PowerTV Works

Based on what we've learned about device compatibility, we're making a few changes:

  1. Google TV is now the recommended platform. We're officially recommending Google TV devices over Amazon FireTV devices going forward. The experience is simply more stable and reliable for PowerTV subscribers.

  2. I am no longer provide pre-configured devices. I'm no longer shipping devices to subscribers. Instead, I'll guide you toward the best compatible devices and help you get set up — you purchase directly from the retailer. This actually works in your favour: you get full warranty protection, faster shipping, and the ability to shop sales.

  3. VPN services are no longer pre-installed. Most PowerTV users do not need a VPN. However, some internet providers — particularly in Saskatchewan, Eastern Canada, and Mexico — may require one. I'm no longer pre-installing VPN software, but I'll point you to the right solution.

⭐ Google Streamer (Top Pick) - Available at the Google Store, Amazon, Best Buy, and many other retailers — the Google Streamer is our #1 recommended device. It offers solid specs, a very reasonable price, and is widely available across Canada. It goes on sale regularly, so keep an eye out for deals before you buy.

💰 Onn 4K / Onn 4K Pro (Best Value) The most affordable Google TV devices on the market, with surprisingly good specs for the price. The catch: they're only available at Walmart, and stock can be limited. Also important — US versions do not easily work in Canada due to region restrictions, so make sure you're purchasing the Canadian version.

🏆 Nvidia Shield / Shield Pro (Premium Option) The gold standard of Android/Google TV streaming devices. Powerful, feature-rich, and built to last. It's the most expensive option and slightly older hardware at this point — but if you want the best, this is it.

🔲 Untested Devices (Use at Your Own Risk) The following devices use Google TV or similar Android-based systems and may work with PowerTV, but have not been formally tested: Buzz TV, RockTek GT1, Formuler Z10, Formuler Z Mini. We can't guarantee performance on these.

Paul McCartney: Man on the Run (2025) — Documentary Directed by Oscar-winner Morgan Neville, this is an intimate portrait of Paul McCartney's extraordinary decade after The Beatles — the formation of Wings, the struggles, the triumphs. Packed with rare archival footage and deeply personal interviews. A must-watch even if you're a casual fan. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mercy (2025) — Chris Pratt Action-packed and now available in On Demand.

Solo Mio (2025) — Kevin James (Angel Studios) The latest from Angel Studios, now available in On Demand.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — The latest Game of Thrones prequel series, set long before the events of the original. Epic fantasy at its best — now available in On Demand.

Love Story (2026 — FX/Hulu)

This month's recommendation from the boss at home is one she could not stop talking about — and honestly, it's easy to see why.

Love Story is Ryan Murphy's stunning limited series chronicling the real-life romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy — one of the most glamorous, complicated, and heartbreaking love stories of the 20th century. Sarah Pidgeon is absolutely electric as Carolyn, and Paul Anthony Kelly is remarkably convincing as JFK Jr. — the resemblance is uncanny. Naomi Watts rounds out the cast as Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

Think gorgeous 1990s New York, impossibly stylish fashion, Kennedy family drama, and a real romance that felt like a fairy tale — right up until it wasn't.

💡 Tip: Quick Fixes for Buffering or Freezing

If you're experiencing playback issues, try these steps before reaching out for support:

  1. Restart your device — Power it fully off and back on (not just sleep mode). Do this weekly as a habit.

  2. Restart your router — Unplug for 30 seconds and plug back in.

  3. Check your internet speed — You need at least 25 Mbps for reliable HD streaming.

  4. Use a wired connection if possible — Ethernet is always more stable than Wi-Fi.

  5. FireTV users — If video freezes but audio continues, this is a known Amazon firmware bug. Consider upgrading to a Google TV device.

⚠️ Service Transparency — Recent Outages

Honesty matters. Here's what happened in February:

February 11th — Full service outage from approximately 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM (about 1 hour). All services were affected. The issue was resolved and service was fully restored within the hour.

Outside of that single event, service has been running exceptionally well. Thank you for your patience when these things happen — and for sticking with us.
